ENTERPRIZE COMMUNITY BRIDGE

DESIGN STUDIO DELTA 2023

The University of Melbourne

3rd year Bachelor of Design

Project Type

Civic

Library

Location

Enterprize Park, Melbourne

This project examines the dynamic adaptability of a Library within the context of a contemporary city like Melbourne, questioning its traditional role within the community. What is a library in the our post-digital? How is public interior space defined, and who is it really intended for? Can a modern library truly serve the diverse needs of everyone?

AXONOMETRIC OF FINAL CONCEPT

The site chosen for this project is particularly challenging. It is located between two train viaducts that are just east of Flinders Street Station. The park is also divided by a road. From the beginning noise was going to either be something that was challenged or embraced. It also forms part of the new Greenline Project being undertaken by the City of Melbourne to re-wild the banks of northern banks of the Yarra and to bring more wildlife and community to these areas.

Concept Development

From the beginning of this project I knew I wanted to build across the road. Primarily because I knew it would be a challenge but also because I wanted to draw from the linearity of the site and the history of the train station. The other key driver early on was leaving the ground plane mostly free of structure in order to accommodate for landscaping and planting to rejuvenate the bank of the river.

You can see in some of my early sketches how I was experimenting with the size of the pavilions that meet the ground as well as how to reduce the impact a large structure would have to light access on the ground.

As my concept developed and experimentation began on how the facade would function I started to realise the importance of structure to this kind of building. As it is literally acting as a bridge I wanted to emanate this ideal. The structure becomes the entire aesthetic device would the facade and the detailed connections mean that the function of the structure is visible from all moments within the building.

DETAILED STRUCTURAL MODEL

As one of the only public interior spaces that exist in modern cities, libraries are constantly evolving. What is needed to provide for the community now might be completely different in even 10 years time. It was important for me
to address this to ensure this building has longevity. As the internal spaces are completely free of structure there is more scope for flexibility. The way I have drawn the spaces above are mostly divided by furniture and half walls to give a human scale to the space without permanence. I see this space being adapted constantly by its community and occupants which is why only essential items are decided now. It is a mere suggestion of program, never an instruction.

This website was created for free using WIX, it is a tool I was encouraged to use during my time at university and was a site that I built up over the course of my undergraduate degree. I am currently in the process of creating a new website portfolio using a different hosting platform that I am keen to share.

I do not align myself with WIX or its views on the war in Gaza and the genocide of the Palestinian people.
