FRAME VS FIELD
FoD:R | Module 4

Olinda is a city of immense growth and development overtime and who’s growth is visible in that the new city pushes up and out from the centre of the old city which “sprawls around them like a loosened belt.” This is the driving theme of the city, this connection between the new and the old that is completely counter intuitive to the natural growth of a city that we might actually live in. In this story there is also a mention of the city retaining the flow of “lymph” from new too old. This is reference to the fluid that flows in the human bodies lymphatic system, which is notably not a closed circuit like the circulatory system.

These elements are what I have conveyed in my remodelling of the University of Melbourne’s Old Quad. My city is a spiralling tower that shows the new city pushing up through the centre and each older section of the city sprawling down. The system is a spiral so it is not closes and there is a distinct beginning and end.

The notation I have used on the isometric view shows the passage of time from top to bottom, Time lines are more abundant at the bottom to indicate more time having passed in the older city. I also use atmospheric circles to indicate the inhabitant of the city with the older individuals at the bottom having lived longer take up more space and energy.
